How We Can Help You to Reduce the Carbon Footprint of Your Website

Our services are technical and focus on achieving sustainability, technical efficiency and commercial performance for our clients.

You can find out more about our services here.

How do we supply the service for existing websites?

Step 1 -> Measurement & Consultation

Every client is different. We listen to the client and learn about their business and how they are currently using their website to achieve their objectives.

We measure the current carbon usage of their website based on bandwidth, page rendering and backend processes. We also measure some other factors around general performance & speed. We study their web analytics to understand their web traffic patterns and how their customers interact with the website.

Step 2 -> Action!

The work itself – We identify the main areas for improvement and use a rating system, based on overall impact vs effort to achieve, to create a scope of work.

At this point, depending on the client’s preference we can either:

a) Create a detailed list of actions for the client’s own developer team to carry out, provide the developers with consultation, assess their work and measure the results once completed.

or

b) Get access to the client’s servers and carry out the changes ourselves. We follow extremely secure practices. We keep a record of all changes made.

Step 3 -> Final Assessment and Report

The report includes the carbon reduction per page view, and the impact that this will have over time (CO2 reduction per month / year). It includes recommendations about maintaining the website’s performance so that future changes don’t reintroduce unsustainable practices.

How do we supply the service for new website builds?

This part of our service varies a lot more from customer to customer than our core carbon reduction service. We can build any type of website with the principles of sustainability by design.

This can also be provided as a consultative service where we aid your design / tech team to build a sustainable, low-carbon product.

How does our pricing work?

Our customers vary immensely ranging from a 10-page company portfolio site to an online store with >200k products, to a network of blogs and forums running across multiple cloud platforms.

With this in mind, we always price by an estimate of the time required based on the complexity of the job. The charge for the impact assessment and creating the scope of works is communicated up-front. Once we have a scope of works, we can give the client an accurate quote on either completing the work for them or briefing their developers. This allows us to be transparent and clear with the client at every step.

Who does it work best for?

Website Carbon Reduction is for websites with either high traffic or complex backend processes like content aggregation. The more traffic the website has, the greater the overall impact of reducing the bandwidth of each page / file will be.

It also works well for any website that scores poorly for CO2 usage, because it will have the added effect of improving many commercial metrics like loading speed and Core Web Vitals.

How do we monitor our clients' ongoing carbon footprint?

In the development pipeline, we’re working on a way that we can continue to monitor client websites and make sure that they continue to perform well. Once this launches, we will also be able to launch our stamp of approval for client sites to display.

What is 'Sustainability by Design'?

Sustainability by design is to build your project with sustainability at its core from the outset. This is a great way to approach new projects, as it can bring much better results overall than when having to modify an existing project / product to make it more sustainable.

The same approach can also be taken with things like data privacy and accessibility, making them core pillars of your project plan from the outset.

Are there types of websites that it doesn't work so well for?

Sites that are built with Squarespace, Wix, Shopify, etc.

Websites that are built using these types of DIY website builder platforms are not suitable for our services. These types of websites do not offer access to the code / underlying technology, so we cannot work with them.

Sites that show programmatic advertising

We have no control over what is loaded through the ads. Ads are known for being an incredibly bad performance drain. We can optimise the website, but the ads will always impair the performance scores and limit the amount of energy consumption we can reduce. We can advise on the most sustainable ad partners to work with.

Specific to climate sector clients

Custom API creation

We can create a secure, performant, low energy usage restful API using your data. For example, we could create an API that tracks how much CO2 you have saved your clients over time.

Data visualisation

We can use your data or 3rd party API data to create all manner of visual charts, graphs, map overlays, etc. We can create engaging, interactive representations of data.

Preferential pricing

We offer considerable price reductions to clients working in the sustainability, climate and environmental sectors.
